You have so many choices to make when you are building your new home. Then you are finally unpacked and moved in. Now it is time for interior design to make your newly built home feel and be exactly how you want it to.

Color is the first and main decision in interior design. It is important in every room in your new home. Of course, neutrals remain common but there are still opportunities for accent walls and bolder colors.

Using Color

Color conveys emotion and comfort, there are many different ways to use it to your advantage.

Matching Paint with Wood

You’ve just spent a lot of money on wood trim and wood cabinets and you want to pick colors that accent the warmth of the wood.

Warm beautiful neutrals work best with wood. If you choose a color that is too bright or clean it will be too much of a contrast with the wood.

Trim Paint Selection

If you have chosen to paint instead of stain your trim just remember the darker your wall, the darker the trim color should be.

Using plain white or off-white can create too much of a contrast and make your room look unfinished.

Picking the Sheen of Paint

This part of the process can make a difference and a few things to consider include:

  • Satin, Semi or Full Gloss for trim, doors, cabinets and bathroom walls

  • Flat or Eggshell for walls and for new homes use Eggshell

  • Remember that flat hides imperfections

  • Sheen from walls to trim always needs to be changed

The Bathroom and Garage

A Bathroom and Garage are two of the best places to experiment with a bold paint color. Bathrooms are small so paint is less expensive and the Garage is usually a Man-Cave that is also deserving of some color.

These are just a few tips to help you with the interior design of your new home. Make sure you make the home your own with the right choices for you and your family.
