You may not have put much thought into the roof you plan to get for the home you are building. Roofs are fairly standard on production homes which make it easy for people to not give it much thought. It’s important to understand the basics about roofs especially if they decide to upgrade at some point or if they purchase a custom-built house. Here is a look at concrete tiles, asphalt shingles and green roofs.

Concrete Tiles

Concrete tiles are a roofing material option used on construction homes. They are made similarly to concrete pavers used for walkways and driveways. They look great and offer a very durable product. While water can seep underneath, the roof is made with a water-proof membrane to protect the home against moisture.

It’s going to be a heavier option but isn’t an issue as long as the foundation can support this heavy material. The good news is concrete tiles have a longer lifespan than asphalt shingles. Be careful when walking on a concrete roof; it can crack if walked on unlike asphalt shingles that will only get a smudge.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the more common type of material used 70% of the time. Cost is better on asphalt shingles since it’s less eye-appealing but it’s still going to be great quality and save you money. They tend to only last 20 to 25 years depending on the weather. Asphalt shingles are made with fiberglass to make them fire-resistant.

Green Roofs

You can always go with a slate, ceramic tiles or metal roof for a modern design. They are more expensive but they are fireproof and very durable. Butterfly roofs are becoming more common where the typical peaked design is inverted and lifts the edges of the roof at the low point in the middle. It gives the home more light and reduces rain runoff points. Green features that many are choosing now are skylights, solar panels, and a green roof that will double as a flower, vegetable and herb garden.

These are the most common types of roofs and how they differ.
